Another sad day

Barney passed over the rainbow bridge this afternoon.  He was the first of our rescue dogs, arriving from Spain with George but coming to us before George needed a new UK home.  He had been unwell for a few weeks but nothing serious.  The vet gave him a course of Steroids to deal with an abscess in his ear where another dog had nipped him when playing.  He then developed a stomach but and was prescribed a course of antibiotics.  While he was on these he started to loose weight.  That didn't seem like a major issue as we were restricting his diet to cut out a lot excess calories from treats, in fact we were really quite happy as he came down to his target weight.

The problem was that he continued to loose weight. We knew he had a liver problem which was responding well to a dietary supplement (with milk thistle extract what ever that is). It was when he started to be very quiet and not want to climb the stairs or go for walks that alarm bells started to ring. He was still eating though. In fact last night he ate a large part of my Pork Chop! What was really worrying was that he started to loose coordination in his back legs. Nothing major just occasionally skittering rather than standing straight up. That was until this morning when he didn't want to stand up and most concerning he had a nose bleed. So off to the Vets he went. They kept him in for some tests the results showed his liver function had improved, but his heart rate was high, he was running a temperature and his blood sugars were through the roof. we got a call to say that they were extremely worried. To carry out further tests would need him to be anaesthetised and they didn't think he would be able to cope with that. The incipient diabetes could be treated but the biggest issue was that he was probably had some sort of tumour in his nose or head which was causing his nose bleeds and general lethargy. We were given the choice of a lot of unpleasant tests he may well not survive and which probably wouldn't help or having him put to sleep. Not a great situation.

We drove over to the Vets, a drive of 30 minutes, and when we got there his condition had deteriorated even further.  His nose bleed was worse, he could only just manage to turn his head to look at us and couldn't summon up the energy for a tail wag.  His gums were very pale (which they hadn't been that morning) and generally he just wasn't in a good state.  The decision was as easy as it ever can be and he was PTS after we had time to say our goodbyes and give him a last cuddle.  He slipped away very calmly and quickly.  He was ten and a half years old.

Mrs E and I are very upset as you might imagine even though we know it was the right thing to do for Barney.  Whoever said 'Grief is the price you pay for love' knew what they were talking about.

One in, one out.

You may recall that back in January I posted about a new rescue dog; Mina.  The idea was that we would adopt her, but sadly it didn’t work out.  While things started out well, as Mina became more settled and her confidence grew issues started to surface.

Initially it centred around resource guarding, especially with regards to food.  It then escalated to guarding the house against men coming in the door, including me!  Finally she started attacking our other dog, Barney, to stop him getting to his food.  At that point we accepted defeat and that she had to be returned to the rescue centre.

We were once again a one dog family until a couple of weeks ago when our daughter asked us to look after her 18 month old working Cocker Spaniel; Mabel.  Mabel and the other dog in the their house don't get on so they needed to be separated.  Whether this is a permanent arrangement remains to be seen but for the moment double doggie life is happening once again at Chez Elenderil.

Mabel, looking like butter wouldn't melt...

We have been forcibly reminded that an18 month old working Cocker is a lot more energetic than a 10 year old Kooikerhundje or even George at his prime for that matter, and don't get me started on food!   She even makes the late great George look like he was watching his weight.  George used to wait to eat Barney's left overs, well I say eat, hoover up is more accurate.  Mabel doesn't wait, if Barney turns his back for an instance she is in (like Flynn as we used to say).  Other than that they are getting along really well.  We are also back to some aspects of puppy training, but she is a bright girl, keen to please and the training is going well enough that we can let her off lead for a run in the local park secure in the knowledge that her recall is good (as long as the dog treats hold out).  I'm currently having to get up a couple of times each night to let her out to wee, but that seems to be due to a bladder infection which she is having treatment for and does seem to be reducing the trips to the back garden in the wee (see what I did there) small hours.  For the last few nights there have been no 'accidents' so that seems to be going well too.

It's nice having a second dog around the place even if she is currently on my side of the bed sleeping snuggled up to Mrs E!  Dogs eh?

Say hello to Mina

I almost adopted another Brittany between Christmas and New Year but it fell through in really rather tragic circumstances.  On sober reflection we decided that having another Brittany after loosing George would probably be too much like trying to replace him.  In any event a different Brittany's personality would not have been like George’s and it was his personality that we loved.  That I thought was that until Mrs E spotted a dog in a local shelter that had just arrived from Romania.  A ten year old bitch of (lets be honest here) uncertain parentage, what my dad would have called a 'Heinz'  as in 57 varieties in there, but with a very laid back personality.  Good with other dogs and in need of a foster home.  So last Wednesday we drove over to the shelter and long story short came home with a new dog, on fostering with a view to adopting terms. Two days later we rang the shelter to make it an adoption!   Its a kind of doggy inertia selling I swear it is.

Mina is nearest the camera

Mina, as that is her name, was a bit nervous of me to start with and preferred Mrs E's company and has been following her around like a shadow.  She has now overcome those nerves , it's amazing how far a goodly portion of roast chicken goes to earn a dog's trust, and has settled in rather well.  So we are once again a two dog family.  Happy days.
